I told the last person I had a 1992 Volvo 940 Turbo.
I was hung up on before I said the Volvo part.

I have been getting this on my cell and work lines a lot lately. My theory is that a surge comes every time someone new buys a mailing list with my name on it.
I have also been solicited by companies offering to sell me email lists.

I don’t think there’s any lists, actually, just auto-dialers shotgunning calls out. That’s why- if you pick up- there’s a brief silence. the auto-dialer has to recognize that someone answered the phone and then connect you to the recording or call center.
the stupid thing is that they’ve started using spoofed numbers with the same “exchange” (first three digits after the area code) in an attempt to make it look like a “local” call and hopefully you’re more likely to answer. except in the age of mobile phones, the exchange number is frickin’ meaningless. nothing says someone else with the same first three digits as mine has to be anywhere near me.

That’s true. It’s not the same as email lists. I have a telezapper that used to fool the machines into thinking the number was out of service, but then they got smarter machines.

Luckily SHAKEN/STIR is coming...
Unfortunately: Cable industry fights plan to require robocall-detection technology

Last call I got was about 1.5 years ago . It was a real person on the other end asking if I was interested in an extended warranty for my vehicle.
I acted super excited and said “OMG, finally I can get a warranty on my 1994 Voyager!”.
The phone went silent for a moment. “I’m sorry sir, I don’t think we can offer a warranty on your vehicle”.
I started pleading with her just for fun, she finally hung up. That was the last warranty call I’ve gotten.

Yeah, I don’t know anyone who currently has my area code so I know if a Nashville number shows up it’s spam. I haven’t lived there in 15 years.

I’ve been getting these on voice mail for months now. We get enough garbage like this that we just don’t answer the phone anymore unless it’s a number we know. What’s funny is their robodialer isn’t smart enough to deal with the delay on our voice mail so when we pick up the message it always starts in the middle of their message - in just about the same spot, every time. I’ve gotten to where I recognize it within the first few syllables and immediately delete it.
You did give me a great idea though - it might be fun to do the same thing “attempting” to get an extended warranty for my 1979 El Camino. Think they’d bite? :)

I was getting about 2-3 calls a day about this earlier this year. Has stopped since.

How about my 1970 datsun? Will they fix OEM parts like the nearly impossible to find brake booster?

i love to have fun with those people. I also once had a Ferrari 550. He said they dont insure those and asked what else I had. I said I had a boat. he said they only insure things on the road and I said the boat is on a trailer in the road and demanded insurance. he got mad with me and we ended up yelling and swearing at each other. I was laughing after he hung up, i dont think he was.

In the days before cell phones I got a call at 7:30 on a satruday morning. The only person who would do that is my mom. Anyway it was a telemarketer for AT&T or some similar shit. I told him no, good by. He kept talking so I told him “Fuck off” and hung up. He called back a few minutes later to tell me I was very rude. I told him to fuck off again, he didn’t call back a 3rd time.

An engineer would not make such a heinous mistake. I’d expect so much from a doctor or lawyer, but not an engineer.
